Ultra High Definition and how it effects the world of Makeup
January 30, 2008Jim Jannard (Owner of Oakley sunglasses) got plenty of laughs when he first announced at NAB that he was creating an Ultra High Definition camera with a full size 35mm CMOS sensor with a price point of $17,500.00- now, nearly two years later the RED Camera is real and it looks like Jim Jannard is the one who’s laughing now.
With Panasonic and Sony scrambling to come up with a way to compete you have to wonder what makes the RED so unique.
The RED camera is a camera capable of shooting at 4k resolution utilizing their own “Mysterium Sensor” that produces images rated at 12 million effective pixels- if your confused right now, check out the image below…

Last week I posted an article on the differences between SD and HD with a similar visual, the difference here is what happens once you transcend High Definition. You’ll see now that we have resolutions labeled 2k and 4k (or common resolutions for a rapidly emerging format called Ultra High Definition.) These images are extremely large, in-fact they are nearly three times the size of traditional HD or 35mm film. Currently the only camera capable of capturing a larger image/more information are IMAX cameras.
This means makeup has met its biggest challenge, perfection. It’s easy to fool the audience when your working on a film thats intended for a Standard Definition medium, however HD and now Ultra-HD are the latest rage and that means makeup artists need to know the technical knowledge behind the medium they will be working with. With Airbrushing you can achieve flawless coverage that will even fool an IMAX camera. Why? Technology, technology, technology! Airbrush Makeup is sprayed through an airbrush gun as a liquid formula, the formula gets broken up into an even mist that covers the skin evenly and naturally, the colors can also be mixed to make the perfect color match!
Check out Temptu’s Website for product information and more faqs.
Also check out the RED One site and read up on some of the technology behind their Ultra-HD camera.

Ben Cho does Body Paint
January 28, 2008(from www.fashionista.com)
We hear the body painting trend has gone beyond international Vogue spreads:
Ben Cho has hired a crew of air brushers to paint his models before they hit the runway for his Fall ‘08 show.
We’ll try to be backstage taking photos of the color war, and we desperately hope Lara Stone’s in the lineup -
After all, she’s the expert on how to look good painted.
Whether this catwalk trend will translate into any actual style choices is somewhat doubtful, but as long as nobody’s spraying themselves with an orange “suntan” shade, we’ll support anyone’s curiosity to experiment the look come Spring.

Synecdoche, New York – Behind the Scenes
January 25, 2008I just got news that Charlie Kaufman’s latest work “Synecdoche, New York” is set to be released March 21 2008. It is Mr. Kaufman’s directorial debut featuring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener, and Michelle Williams. The film was shot on-location throughout New York; Temptu played a vital role in the production of ‘Synecdoche’ we applied a custom full body tattoo that took 2 days to complete on actress Robin Weigert (Calamity Jane in Deadwood.)
After we completed the transfer we recieved a call from the studio asking us to come back and apply another transfer on another actress… (any guesses?)
The transfer was applied using a combination of our Pro Transfers and our New Pro Palettes pictured below in this Behind the Scenes photo.

Airbrush Makeup meets High Definition : or how Airbrush Cosmetics revolutionized the television industry.
January 22, 2008With High Definition being all the rage these days whether it be in Television, Film, or even Photography- Makeup artists find themselves working backwards, that is before they turn to Airbrushing.
As technology improves and imaging equipment evolves the images are becoming larger and larger with outstanding detail. Thats good news for the techno guru’s but for the person in front of the lens… Well lets just say it can be rather frightening!
Lets look at the difference between Standard Definition (or commonly called SD) versus High Definition (HD.) SD and HD are terms used to describe the resolution (or size) of the video or image. An SD image usually has a resolution of 640 x 480 where an HD signal is more of a broad term used to describe any signal larger than the common SD signal, common HD resolutions are 1280 x 720 and 1920 x 1080. Below is a photo representing the size comparison between SD and HD – in this case, the pink and yellow boxes display common Standard Def sizes where as the green and purple represent the common High Def sizes.

So what does this mean? A whole lot. With an increase in resolution comes an increase in detail, with an increase in detail- well, we get to see just about everything…In comes the Airbrush, with Airbrush Makeup the foundation is sprayed through a spray-gun breaking the liquid up into microdots that sit on the skin, giving the appearance of a flawless complexion.
Traditional makeup gets rubbed into the skin and can appear caked-on or thick in front of HD Cameras.
Airbrush Makeup is light and sweat-proof (a must if your working on a film-set.) Because the foundation is a liquid formula it can be easily mixed with other colors for custom skin tone matching and blends smoothly and evenly.
News is harsh. Not literally - technically. The cameras used in the News stations are broadcast cameras designed to shoot at 60 Interlaced frames (or 60i) this means that for every 1 second of video, 60 images are captured representing the motion that occurred within that 1 second (video and film are nothing more than photos captured consecutively in a row and displayed consecutively in a row on a set timeline.) So why is the News harsh? Well you may have noticed that the News has a different “look” then one of your favorite films, thats because film cameras shoot at 24 frames a second (for every 1 second of video we have 24 images representing the motion within that second.) Since film is captured at a slower frame rate, the result is a softer more dreamlike image that often displays motion blurring , whereas the 60i News footage tends to be A LOT sharper and has what many Cinematographers say a “harsh look to it.” Because the cameras are sharper, News stations are constantly looking for ways to make their anchors appear more Flattering in front of the lens, with the help of Airbrush Makeup this has become a much easier task.
Temptu Cosmetics specializes in creating the highest quality Airbrush Makeup designed for the High Definition revolution.

Bjork’s new music video – DECLARE INDEPENDENCE
January 18, 2008
“Declare Independence” the new song from the off-beat singer Bjork is now in video form. The video was directed by Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Be Kind Rewind) and features a very elaborate rope system that funnels through a microphone chamber into a crowd of people, as Bjork sings each note, the rope is sprayed with a different color. When it came to finding the right product to make this dreamlike contraption work, Michel and Bjork came to Temptu.
Temptu creates the highest quality Airbrush Cosmetics, Body Art, and Special Effects Makeup. We strive to offer the best products that are available for airbrushing as we constantly continue to develop and perfect our own formulas.
We supplied Partizan Films with a product we distribute called AutoAir and offered our full support and assistance, it was a great opportunity to show what can happen when creativity and technology collide.

Johnny Depp gets the Airbrush Treatment
January 17, 2008The Oscar winning makeup artist Peter Owen was hired by Tim Burton to work on his latest film “Sweeney Todd”When it came to the makeup Peter Owen knew that Mr. Burton would be using a Bleach Bypass Processing method – this is a method that gives the film a high contrast look and also adds to the Silver Halides in the film negative thus creating a mute silver look, knowing this Owen’s decided to go for a very “dead” look, he felt this would perfectly compliment the colors of the film.
Owen’s decided to airbrush the foundations in order to achieve a flawless paleness to the faces, he then went in under the eyes and sprayed a darker color creating dark rings and bags giving him a feeling of depth, he also used his airbrush to spray a stripe through his hair adding to the drama of the character.
Peter Owen is a very talented makeup artist with over 20 award winning film credits, 7 personal wins, and 1 Oscar win (Lord of the Rings)
If you wanted to achieve this look you could use Temptu’s Porcelain Foundation with a smidgen of our Blue Adjuster for the foundation.

The History of Airbrush Makeup
January 16, 2008
In this article we will take a look at the history of Airbrush Makeup. The first Airbrush was invented in 1879 by Abner Peeler using mostly spare parts from a jeweler’s workshop, 4 years later a company by the name of Liberty Walkup began marketing Peeler’s invention. In 1893 Thayer and Chandler Art Materials presented the first modern airbrush at the World Columbian Exposition in Chicago, this device resembled the body of a pen and functioned similarly to the way the modern airbrushes do today.
In 1958 MGM began production on their epic film Ben-Hur (1959) – during production the makeup artists found themselves needing to apply faux tans to the thousands of extras who were supposed to be Romans, the airbrush proved to be their answer. They began spraying the extras with a makeshift foundation and found that the method worked extremely well.
Its revival started in some early and more resent sci-fi films. It is used to enhance many alien characters, prosthetic make up. In the mid 70’s airbrush face painting emerged as a popular art form that leaked slowly into Hollywood studios. It was first seen in the hair and beauty trade shows bal masque completions. Temporary tattoos, conventional make up, fantasy make up, Bodyart, fingernails hair and even airbrush tanning are some of the styles being used today.
