Comic-Con 2010

July 30, 2010

Comic-Con, held annually in San Diego for over 40 years, started off about comic books but for the past few years it has evolved into a new source for movies, television, video games, toys, and of course, the costumes.

The range of characters and attention to detail is mind blowing. Characters from movies often have better costumes than the ones seen on screen. It all depends on how much time, money, and creativity can be put into it. There was no shortage of Stormtroopers, with varying levels of quality. My favorite was a fellow who had done his armor with paper plates and a white bucket! Genius. Why not have fun and be silly with it?

Comic-Con also has become a mecca for all things ZOMBIE.  This year included a zombie walk, but the real buzz at the convention was about Frank Darabont’s new series on AMC, The Walking Dead.

Based on the series of graphic novels by Robert Kirkman, Walking Dead chronicles the survival of Sherif Rick Grimes and his family in a world of zombies. Conventioneers were treated to a preview and panel, showcasing the fantastic F/X makeup work of Greg Nicotero and crew.

Much to the chagrin of local industry, the series shoots in Georgia, and features zombies made up in 100+ degree heat! Nicotero elaborated on this, emphasizing the need for numerous touch ups. Various zombies were even hired to promote the show on the streets around San Diego. Look for the premier this October.
